Devil May Cry, the new animated show on Netflix, is genius. For so many reasons I am enthralled. The series reveals the erotic ego of a particular type of American masculine psyche, one which votes for Trump-ism and cries out in secret for fascism, who creates an enemy, paints a picture of an Other, in order to reward himself with victory.
It’s the age old psychic trick — you’re a child who believes you’re the center of the universe; you discover you aren’t, get pissed, and find someone to blame for it. Everything else is just window dressing and costumery. You’ve concocted your narrative and now will build your personality and worldview around it.
This show explains why Trumpism will last beyond Trump and the hero fantasy, the domination fantasy of our countrymen, as they battle made-up monsters and shadowbox with the boogiemen, lashing out wildly at everyone and everything, will mean misery for all of us.
